From 2020-2022, Maya was a volunteer with the youth-led climate justice organization the Sunrise Movement. She began with voter outreach campaigns, where she later helped develop Sunrise’s “deep canvassing” program for the 2021 Georgia senate run-offs, and hosted phonebanks with guests such as Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and politician Julian Castro. As part of Sunrise’s Generation on Fire, she joined a 400-mile walk from New Orleans to Houston. She was also involved in local efforts, including three city council wins.
